Morning Platitude from The GratiDude
“You may say that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.” -John Lennon
And another quote I really like that will paraphrase is that “ people who do great things are also great dreamers”.
I believe this to be true.
I believe more people would spend time dreaming of new things they want to try or experience if our society was more supportive of the dreamers. If we encourage dreaming and see it as the productive behavior that it really is, we might even schedule time during the school day and have creative sessions of daydreaming placed in with mathematics and science. If we were really focused on educating the youth to build future entrepreneurs and changemakers, we would encourage dreaming and make it compulsory. The reality is that school has become more of an education on conformity, not asking questions and memorizing information that you can repeat later. An emphasis on critical thinking has been lost completely, and as a result, our populous have become very passive and somewhat drone like in their ability to be manipulated and controlled.
Dreaming is also a great way to process and reduce anxiety.
While dreaming can sometimes be a source of anxiety (particularly in the form of bad dreams or nightmares), it can also play a role in processing stress and potentially reducing anxiety. Some theories suggest dreams help us process difficult emotions and experiences, potentially making them less disruptive to our waking lives. Additionally, lucid dreaming (being aware you are dreaming) may offer a way to confront and potentially reduce anxiety related to specific situations or fears, according to Scientific American.
Here's a more detailed look:
Potential benefits:
Emotional Processing:
Dreams, especially those occurring during REM sleep, may help process and regulate emotions, potentially reducing the impact of stressful experiences on waking life.
Threat Simulation:
The "threat simulation theory" suggests that dreams can be a way for the brain to rehearse potentially threatening situations, allowing individuals to better cope with similar situations in the future.
Lucid Dreaming:
Lucid dreaming, where you are aware you are dreaming, can be used to confront and potentially overcome fears or anxieties by practicing desired responses within the dream environment.
Reduced Anxiety:
Some studies indicate lucid dreaming techniques can reduce anxiety symptoms, potentially by providing a sense of control over one's dreams.
Potential downsides:
Some individuals experience anxiety dreams or nightmares, which can be distressing and disruptive to sleep.
Relationship between Anxiety and Dreams:
Research suggests a link between anxiety disorders and an increased frequency of bad dreams, potentially creating a cycle where anxiety and bad dreams feed into each other.
For dreaming to be effective, you can never consider what other people will think about the plan that you are hatching or you will never get off the ground so to speak.
If this young French man had sought out approval or asked what other people think about taking his dog, hang, gliding or paragliding, he never would’ve attempted to train his dog to do it.
But because he trusted his dreams and then turned his dream into a goal with specific actions and a concerted effort, he now can share this experience with his buddy and to bring his dog with him during all types of weather up into the air to fly together.
We will always find a reward for our dreams and for pursuing those dreams and turning them into goals and that is guaranteed. Even if that reward is simply learning how to try new things the process of feeling your intuition and acting on it. Even these basic takeaways are fantastic and will help us with our next or future endeavor.
Keeping in mind that everything will fall into the bucket of either being a lesson or a blessin’ is the only way to view your life through a lens of gratitude.
Big thanks to my new friend Terry who made me a wonderful cup of coffee and we had a great chat on her back deck this morning. Like many of us, she has made moves and had changes in her life that she never anticipated. Throughout all the curveballs she has maintained a growth-mindset, strong in her faith, and childlike curiosity as to her own life and process. She is just a bright, beautiful woman that I am so glad that I met on this trip.
This beautiful mystery that is also called life keeps delivering the goods for me and I’m in the homestretch to get up to Michigan to visit some old friends and to pick my kid up later this afternoon. Enjoy your Thursday and if you’re up in Michigan hit me up and let’s connect and compare notes on some dreams we are chasing and share our attitude of gratitude.
