Morning Platitude from The GratiDude
Comparison is the death of joy and an impossible path to feeling satisfied.
We don’t have to look outside externally to find out how we’re doing. We simply need to be honest with ourselves and ask if we are doing the very best we can and if not, how can we start to feel better such that we’re comfortable putting in our full and best effort in everything we participate in.
This doesn’t mean that we’re doing the best that we’ve ever done or that we are accomplishing something extraordinary every single day. It simply means that given everything we’ve experienced and where we are when we woke up, we’re doing the very best we can to maximize our growth, our learning and to stay healthy. Furthermore, we plan to share our happiness with other people.
If everyone took this approach in the morning to how they get after their day, the world would certainly be a much more content and enjoyable place to operate in.
Recognizing and acknowledging your own efforts, often referred to as self-compassion and positive self-talk, has several positive impacts on your health:
Mental Health Benefits:
Reduces Stress and Anxiety: By focusing on achievements, no matter how small, you shift focus from perceived failures, which can counteract negative self-talk, often linked to amplified stress and anxiety.
Improves Self-Esteem and Confidence: Acknowledging and celebrating progress reinforces positive behaviors and enhances self-esteem, leading to a more positive self-image and belief in one's abilities.
Enhances Emotional Resilience: Self-compassion helps you face challenges with greater adaptability and optimism, viewing setbacks as part of the human experience rather than personal failures, leading to better coping mechanisms.
Fosters a Positive Mindset: Celebrating successes contributes to an optimistic outlook, helping to see challenges as opportunities for growth rather than insurmountable barriers.
Physical Health Benefits:
Helps Manage Chronic Illnesses: A belief in your ability to cope with chronic illness can improve self-management of the condition, including medication adherence and healthy lifestyle choices.
May Lead to Healthier Choices: Recognizing your efforts and feeling capable can boost motivation to engage in healthy habits like exercise and healthy eating.
May Improve Physical Well-being: Studies suggest a link between self-compassion and better physical health, possibly mediated by reduced perceived stress and increased engagement in health behaviors.
Social and Behavioral Benefits:
Strengthens Relationships: Self-compassion fosters empathy and understanding, which can improve communication and strengthen connections with others.
Supports Goal Achievement: Acknowledging your progress can increase your motivation and commitment to achieve goals, leading to a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
Promotes a Culture of Support: Openly celebrating your achievements can encourage others to do the same, fostering a supportive environment and reducing stigma associated with challenges.
By recognizing and celebrating your efforts, you nurture a positive relationship with yourself, leading to enhanced emotional and physical well-being and a more fulfilling life.
For me, I have been recapitulating quite a bit lately as I’m in the process of writing my book and so the ideas and the explorations of those thoughts are happening all the time and my creative juices are really flowing right now. Furthermore, it’s allowing me to go back to before I quit drinking as well and the time period right after I put the bottle down, and it has been an interesting exercise. I have to say that I’m very impressed with my ability to survive everything that I threw it myself, especially during the last 10 years of my drinking career when it seems I must’ve dodged millions of bullets and used up a lot of favors from my guardian angels and my protective spirits.
There is no doubt that I had a lot of help from a lot of agents of a higher power that were out there protecting me and keeping me from ending up dead.
Another reminder of my own journey in progress is when I speak with people that are very close to me that remember the conversations that we were having 12 to 18 months ago as I was getting through the divorce process with the mother of my kids. I had so many questions and so many moments of feeling anxiety because of all of the unknowns of that process.
Because my kids are everything to me and my entire world I was experiencing a lot of anxiety primarily because it was obvious I had no control over the process and because I was unfamiliar with it. It allowed me to make up my mind if I wasn’t careful to race into all sorts of different scenarios and permutations and hypotheticals, which really didn’t help me at all. It was an incredible opportunity to learn how to let go and to focus on the things that I could control and be OK letting go of the rest.
It’s important that we acknowledge and thank ourselves for our thoughts and the desire to improve and to get better. We don’t need to measure how much improvement we’ve had and what are the exact changes that have occurred in our life. It’s OK to be satisfied and content with the mindset of growth and to let the progress happen organically and to feel good about your process without constantly feeling the need to measure results.
Consistency is the key to creating a joyful life by getting out of your own way, and finding ways to get comfortable with stillness to receive your real direction which always comes from your sacred self and from your internal NorthStar.
I’m going to look back on the summer of 2025 as being an incredible growth and learning period for me because I’m going to get this book out of me by hell or high water over the next 60 days and produce a rough draft by Labor Day that I can get to folks for editing. This will make sure that my book is in the hands of whoever wants to read it in the fourth quarter of 2025.
I can’t put this toothpaste back in the tube now, and by announcing my intention to complete this book I have committed fully in every fiber of my body to finishing the task and into learning and growing as much as possible in the process.
I can do hard shit and I’m about to show you again that truth.
I’m proud of me and I’m proud of you because if you’re reading this, you’re investing in yourself and you’re practicing self-love as you continue to cultivate and enjoy your summer attitude of gratitude.
