Morning Platitude from The GratiDude
How do you engage with your life experience?
That is where you win and lose.
This reminds me of the Jim Carrey quote where he reflected on his own life experience and opined that “I think everybody should get rich and famous and do everything they ever dreamed of so they can see that it's not the answer."
So, when Andre Agassi got to be number one in the world, and he realized that it didn’t cure the emotional ills that he had or satisfy him on a spiritual level enough to patch up his relationship with his dad, he knew that he was looking for answers in the wrong places.
It really is about creating a process and a way that you live your life that you find enjoyable, satisfying, and fun without significant attachment to outcomes. All outcomes in our life, whether their personal, professional, physical, all of these things are dependent on so many other variables other people and circumstances that we are never going to be able to fully control the way things play out because there’s more than ourselves involved in the equation, we don’t control all the variables so we can’t control the outcome.
What can we control?
Primarily, we control our reactions and how we manifest our mindset in our moment to moment and day-to-day behavior.
This begs the question how do we get to a place where we feel very good about our mindset and our moment to moment and daily decisions?
Yes, focusing on what is within your control can significantly contribute to greater happiness and well-being. By shifting your focus from external factors, you cannot influence to internal actions and choices, you gain a sense of agency and empowerment that fosters a more positive outlook.
Here's why and how:
Reduced Stress and Anxiety:
Worrying about things outside of your control, like other people's actions or unpredictable events, can lead to chronic stress and anxiety.
By accepting that some things are beyond your influence, you can redirect your energy towards what you can manage, reducing the feeling of being overwhelmed.
Increased Sense of Agency:
Focusing on your own choices, behaviors, and reactions gives you a sense of control over your life.
This sense of agency is a key component of well-being, as it allows you to feel proactive and capable of navigating challenges.
Improved Focus and Productivity:
When you're constantly preoccupied with things you can't change, it's difficult to concentrate on the tasks at hand.
By directing your attention to what you can control, you can improve your focus and become more productive in the areas that matter most to you.
Cultivating Gratitude:
Focusing on what you do have control over can naturally lead to a greater sense of gratitude for the positive aspects of your life.
Appreciating what you can control, such as your relationships, personal growth, and daily choices, can enhance your overall happiness.
Examples of what you can control:
Your thoughts and reactions: You can choose how you interpret situations and respond to them.
Your actions: You can decide how to spend your time, what goals to pursue, and how to treat yourself and others.
Your attitude: You can choose to approach challenges with a positive and proactive mindset.
In essence, while you can't control everything that happens in life, focusing on what you can control allows you to shape your experience and cultivate a more positive and fulfilling life.
It all starts with developing thought awareness, and getting comfortable with accepting our own thoughts, and experiencing those in real time by being connected to our breathing and our breath.
This is how we can get in there and do an audit of our thought track and see what our subconscious is serving up to us and if we like what we’re being served.
From here we can control our work ethic and where we expand our energy during our day. When our thinking becomes more connected and grounded to the present moment, we are able to receive and to operate from our higher consciousness versus our more primal amygdala section of our brain and we could be more thoughtful and less reactive.
In the world of golf, there were two very different reactions amongst the elite golfers in the world going back about 25 years and I’m talking about the two players David Duval and Tiger Woods.
David Duval had a season as good as any professional tour player in the history of the game when he won 13 of 34 events in 1999 and that included Tiger Woods in all of those events along with Phil Mickelson, John Daly, and every week a completely stacked field because there was no competition or no other tour that the players could play on back then. In interviews, David, Duval was asked about winning The Open and becoming the number one player in the world and he confessed that it didn’t impact him as much as he thought it would and it wasn’t that big of a deal.
Tiger Woods on the other hand, tasted victory in his first major and it lit something inside of him and all he wanted to do was keep winning and to stack up major wins because the feeling of being the best in the world and his desire to be number one got even stronger and took over his mindset.
Tigers programming allowed him to think and feel this way which helped him as a golfer, but might not have been the best approach for short-term in long-term mental health and well-being.
David Duval might have confessed that he was just a regular guy that had an incredible streak of playing golf but it’s not what defines him for life, and he has a lot of other shit that he’d like to do in his life.
Both approaches are OK and only overtime just like Andre Agassi can you decide which approach is most beneficial for you and long-term that approach is going to be the mindset that remains connected to your higher self and is receiving information that is not purely ego based or based upon the desires to please other people outside of yourself.
It all starts with walking through the gateway of your own breath to sit quietly and comfortably in your own conscious thoughts in the present moment of now.
Don’t be afraid of the quiet and the stillness as it holds all the answers for you, and it’s the only pathway to living every single day with an attitude of gratitude.
