Morning Platitude from The GratiDude
When you think about giving your best to the people in your lives, what do you think about? What is your best?
I can answer that for you at least in part.
The best version of yourself that you can offer to other people is that version of yourself that is completely connected to the present moment of now. That version that is utterly aware of everything going on in real time, feeling their own breath and appreciating the miracle of life, which is the version that you draw up for your friends and family.
Too many times we overthink what it is to be a great friend or a great father or a great brother a great mother it’s not in the detail or the specific actions as much as it is in your own ability to get out of your own way in terms of letting go of future and past thoughts, and instead breathing back into the generous present moment of now. This is where the version of your higher-self lives and this is the version that we are all craving every time we see you.
This is what being present looks like. Thanks Keith.
When someone is truly present, they are more attentive, engaged, and authentic, which can create a more positive and enjoyable interaction for everyone involved. This heightened awareness and focus on the present moment fosters a sense of genuine connection and reduces the likelihood of being distracted or preoccupied, making them a more engaging and considerate companion.
Here's why being present can make someone more pleasant:
Enhanced Engagement:
A present person is more likely to be fully engaged in conversations and activities, actively listening and responding thoughtfully. This creates a sense of feeling heard and valued, making interactions more meaningful and enjoyable.
Reduced Anxiety and Stress:
Being present helps reduce rumination on the past or worry about the future, which can lead to anxiety and stress. This calmer, more centered state of mind allows for a more relaxed and positive demeanor, making interactions more pleasant.
Improved Emotional Regulation:
When someone is present, they are better able to manage their emotions and reactions. This can lead to more stable and predictable interactions, as they are less likely to be reactive or easily upset.
Authenticity and Connection:
Being present often involves being more authentic and genuine. This can foster deeper connections with others, as people are more likely to perceive and appreciate the real person behind the words and actions.
Increased Appreciation for the Small Things:
When someone is present, they are more likely to notice and appreciate the small joys and details of life. This can lead to a more positive outlook and a greater capacity for joy, which can be infectious and uplifting to be around.
Essentially, being present allows individuals to be more fully themselves and more fully engaged with the world around them, making them more pleasant and enjoyable to be around.
Too often we go through the motions when we are with friends and family and we’re already racing ahead in our minds to the next thing or the next activity or the next thought and we’re missing out on precious moments that we can never get back that are literally once in a lifetime.
I’m traveling now with my 15-year-old Willa and it’s a wonderful experience to be present in the moment with her and to share an adventure while staying present for all our escapades and adventures. When she was younger and I was drinking my ability to stay present would come and go and I know I missed many moments and many memories because I was too focused on hanging out with Tito and making sure that he obscured any of my traumatic memories and that those wouldn’t bubble up to be addressed anytime soon.
And that really is a big part of this whole message is that to give the world the greatest presence that you can you simply have to be willing to address whatever comes up in those moments of silence and realize that they’re coming up for a reason. Your sacred-self serves up thoughts and memories and ideas in moments of stillness to give you the opportunity to “clean house “ and take the emotional and mental trash out so that you can feel better and experience calmer.
Starting your morning with a little bit of stillness is a great tone to set for the day and doing a few breath work exercises are a great way to start out a practice without focusing on meditation and thought control. Just do the breath exercises and see what happens.
We are going to make a move over to Canada this afternoon and start checking out some theater over in Stratford, Ontario. We will give you a good update over the next few days of what the theater life looks like when you’re enjoying talented Thespians with an attitude of gratitude.
